Hulu, the TV and movie streaming venture founded by ABC, Fox and NBC announced today that it had cut a deal with record label EMI. For now, the extent of the deal is to devote a page on Hulu exclusively to Norah Jones, an EMI artist.
The channel, as they’re calling it, has all of Jones’s videos, some concert footage and several interviews posted to it.
It looks like Hulu is approaching it’s relationship with record labels in a much different way to sites like YouTube and MySpace, both of which have accumulated massive lists of music videos from all the major labels.
Instead of this being a deal where the labels license out their content en masse as a means of driving traffic to the site – Hulu seems to be offering its existing customer base (and a distinctive presentation format) to labels as a means of driving sales to a specific album or artist.
So of a sudden using music videos to market albums seems like a new idea again.
We like it – and hope Hulu does more.
